A used excavator can be a sound buy if you inspect the high-cost wear items before you wire a deposit. This checklist is written for cross-border buyers who may only see photos and a short video before they commit to a survey.
Undercarriage first
Tracks, rollers, idlers and sprockets are usually the largest remaining cost. Ask for close-up photos of link height, roller flanges and sprocket teeth. If the seller cannot show the undercarriage from both sides, treat the listing as incomplete.
Hours and serials
Match the hour meter to service records and to the serial plate on the machine, engine and pump. Inconsistent hours are common. A surveyor can confirm whether the meter has been replaced.
Hydraulics and boom
Look for cylinder scoring, boom welds, pin play and oil mist around pump fittings. A short idle video is not enough; ask for a working cycle that includes boom-up, stick-out and a swing both ways.
